The Bitcoin Lightning network achieves this by utilizing the smart contract capability on the Bitcoin Blockchain. Because in these smart contracts, lightning nodes lock up their Bitcoin in payment channels. Those are all linked together. Creating an enormous connected payment network that can transact Bitcoin. But settles all the payments mashed together on the Bitcoin Blockchain at a later stage.

Why Lightning is important

Because the Bitcoin network can currently only facilitate 3 transactions per second. These transactions are expensive and slow. But this is done on purpose to keep the economics, and functionality of Bitcoin running. This however also causes it to be difficult for micropayments and fast purchase transactions. Luckily Bitcoin is programmable and we can make side chains on top of it.

The lightning network has grown very fast in recent years and is seeing more and more integration into things such as games, wallets, and exchanges.
