At the launch of the Dash blockchain, it was actually not named Dash. The cryptocurrency started under the name Xcoin but soon changed to Darkcoin. But after some time found that this name was not accepted by a lot of exchanges as they found the name a bit shady. So to adopt a new image for the blockchain it finally changed its name to Dash.

Dash (Digital + Cash) works on a Proof of Work algorithm. But can only be mined by its master nodes. And originally forked off the Bitcoin blockchain. These master nodes are the decision-makers on the Dash network and when created became one of the first DAO’s in the world. Any user can become a Dash master node. But to do so they have to hold a minimum of 1000 Dash tokens.

Dash and Privacy

Dash has since the start been a privacy-based cryptocurrency. As stated in the Dash white paper ” Dash A Privacy-Centric crypto-currency”. With Dash, users can make transactions with private send. Dash private works in a similar way to coin-join on Bitcoin. Using this feature of the Dash cryptocurrency users can transact in a safe and private way. Although often compared to the likes of Monero and Zcash. The Dash group does not see itself as a privacy-only-based currency. But more as a payment ledger for everyday use.
